The People
From undergraduate research to working on Doctoral theses, students at CSI are provided with the tools and opportunities they need to make positive contributions to society by a full- and part-time faculty of over 700. Over 80% of the full-time faculty hold the highest degree in their field.
To gain skills, students may perform research with senior faculty in The City University of New York (CUNY) Institute of Macromolecular Assemblies on the College's campus, using sophisticated equipment side by side with highly credentialed scientists. Other students enrich their education through internships with leading companies in New York City, such as Deutsche Bank, Smith Barney/Citigroup, and Fox Sports, or through public service internships with the New York City Council or the New York State Legislature. "Our intensive classroom instruction, coupled with hands-on research and real world experience, give our students a competitive edge when applying to graduate schools or for positions in their chosen professions," says Dr. Marlene Springer, CSI's president.
New York City's most accomplished high school graduates enroll in the highly selective and rigorous CUNY Honors College for incoming freshmen pursuing four-year degrees.
A fast-changing and increasingly interconnected world demands a wide sphere of knowledge. To meet this challenge, students at CSI participate in dynamic study abroad and exchange programs in over 20 countries.
"International educational experiences are intellectually and socially rewarding," continues Dr. Springer, "and help CSI students develop a respect for the interdependence of humankind as they become tomorrow's professionals and our future leaders."
The Campus
Completed in 1994, the 204-acre campus of CSI/CUNY is the largest site for a college in New York City. Set in a park-like landscape, the campus is centrally located on Staten Island. Mature trees and woodlands, flowering trees and ornamental plantings, fields and outdoor athletic facilities, the great lawn, sculpture, and seating areas create a rural oasis in an urban setting.
There are more than twenty new and renovated neo-Georgian buildings on the campus site, providing classrooms, laboratories, instructional spaces, study lounges, department offices, faculty offices, libraries, recreational areas, and administrative offices.
